iPod Touch: The Guide to Adding/Syncing Your Photos.

I have gotten several questions and many searches to my blog by people that wanted to know how to add photos to their new iPod Touch. I have decided to put together a simple guide for those who haven’t figured out how to do this.

The steps are listed in order below.

1. Open up iTunes and plug in your white syncing cable.

2. When you see the above window pop up click on the Photos tab.

3. Select the folder that your pictures are located in. Once the proper folder is selected iTunes will give you the option of selecting all of your photos or you can pick selected folders and pick only what you want to add.

4. Once you are satisfied with your selection click the sync button. iTunes will optimize your photos for your iPod Touch and then copy them. Be patient, it will take several minutes this task, especially if a large amount of photos has been selected.

5. Once the sync is done you can check to confirm that the photos were copied over.

You should now see the addition of Photos in your Capacity bar.

6. It is now safe to eject your iPod Touch and check out your photos!

Nice to see someone put this together. I’m sure this will help many people.

  2. Anonymous Says:

    Thank you for this

  3. cory Says:

It’s the same way as adding photos to any iPod isn’t it?

  4. lonman06 Says:

It is the same, but a lot of first time owners who bought the touch have been trying to figure out how to do it.

Figured I would lend a hand!

  5. GrimmGreen Says:

cool tutorial , though it’s possible to check your Ipod to make sure the photos transfered while it’s still plugged in , you don’t need to eject it if it’s a touch

  6. Tom Says:

I agree, cool easy step by step walkthrough

  7. Maven Says:

While I admire your willingness to help, I think you’re missing the point. People aren’t asking how to add photos to their Touch because they’re morons who can’t find the “Photos” tab. They’re asking because iTunes throws up an error about 99% of the time upon hitting the Sync button. For example, every time I try and Sync my photos tab, I get an error that says “File was not copied because it can’t be viewed on your iPod”. The funny thing is that this error is totally arbitrary. You can have two .jpgs of exactly the same image, in the exact same format, with the only difference being the name, and iTunes will sync one, but not the other. I’ve only been able to get it to sync maybe TWO photos out of the dozens I’ve tried.

  8. kuyt Says:

That’s weird, what file extension are your pics Maven?

I think these guide is good for new iPod users who just want to know how to add photos. For problems like your you may want to call Apple support?

  9. Nmaster Says:

Half my pictures throw an error, there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to which work and which don’t. And many end up completely distorted, although between syncs some may undistort and others may become distorted.

Basically, the photos isn’t working at all correctly…

  10. Biddychariot Says:

How can I add photos at full resolution without iTunes optimising them?

  11. Photomatt264 Says:

Just last night, I tried to load .jpgs onto my touch and had the same problem. The 1 of 30 it said it could use was digitally scrambled. I went to the web site and downloaded the instructions PDF. In the photo section, it said something about MAC only for loading pics. Has anyone else seen this?

  12. Jason Says:

It said only macs could put photos on the iPod Touch?

  13. Jason Says:

Biddy, I don’t think you can do that. The reason iTunes optimizes the photos is so they look the best on the touch. Is there some reason you don’t want ti optimizing? Is it messing up your photos?

  14. Biddychariot Says:

Not so much messing them up, however when you zoom in on a photo on the Touch, you are zooming in on a low res image and you lose the fine detail.

    • Anonymous Says:

You can add photos at full resolution directly to the DCIM folder on the itouch. You if you dont make thumbnails a blank on will appear but the photo will be fine. I put in a few 10meg pics, but it takes a while for each picture to appear, about 10 secs. initially.

  15. fireman Says:

Biddy, when it optimizes them it makes them smaller?

Maybe they just do it to conserve space on the touch?

  16. Dan84 Says:

Did itunes optimize the photos for the older iPods such as the 5G? I don’t remember ever seeing it doing that, but maybe I missed it.

  17. sandeep K Says:

    thank you very much

It has solved my problem in minutes..

  18. Alwin Says:

hi, i have problems syncing photos to my ipod touch, they apear on my ipod with lines and points, the photos are bad, and in my computer i have like 400 photos, and itunes just sync like 50 and itunes show that some photos cannot be sync because they cannot be seen in ipod touch, please help me, what can i do :D

    • kiwikit Says:

I just got a fix by calling apple while I was in midst of a sync. Select a file for snyc which
include no pictures and sync. That does some kind of reset. The select the file including
your photos, resynd and voila. . . perfect! Apparently two successive sync’s to the same file
causes the second one to think that those pictures are already on the Touch and so it does
nothing. You have to do a fake sync to make the Touch think that the sync is bringing in
different images. Anyway it worked perfectly for me.

  19. lonman06 Says:

Alwin, what is the file extension on the end of them? Is it jpg?

  20. Skywalker Says:

I assume that you use NTFS. It seems that Itunes can sync only from FAT16 or FAT32 without giving errors. Try to sync from a drive with FAT, like a flash drive and voila!

  21. geri66 Says:

hi, I am having similiar difficulties with the pictures on the iTouch. The pictures will not properly display or upload to the iTouch.
Example: Tonight I uploaded 89 photos, out of all 89 photos only 11 pictures showed up on the iTouch and only 5 pictures are viewable the others have lines and distortions in them with different colors shooting through. I am getting an error message saying iTouch can not show some pictures as they will not properly display on the iPod.
I am unsure if this is a lemon iTouch or if there is a program I am suppose to use. I read all the instructions and sync the pictures correctly. I read that if you are using Windows to use the Adobe Photo Elements so I downloaded the trial version to see if this would fix the issue and if so I would purchase the Adobe software for the pictures but all the same problems are happening.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you for your time and help.

    • JK Says:

I wondered if this has been answered? I am having the same problem. When I first got my Ipod Touch photos were being synched and displayed with no problems but it seems following an update (can’t remember if it was an iTunes or Touch update) I now get this problem. Hardly any of my photos sync and many of those that do are distorted. I haven’t changed anything about how I store my photos on my PC (I use Adobe Photoshop album) so the only thing that has changed is the Apple updates. Any ideas?

      • kiwikit Says:

I, too, am having this problem. I’d downloaded a slew (700) photos successfully but then realized that I had to get them into files so I could selectively look at them. I spend a few
hours doing that, and then resynched them all only to find that after about 50, one picture
was half-composed, half-garbage. When I called Apple, I was told to retry it but now that
I hear about so many others having the problem, I’m not very assured. I can’t immediately try to re-snych, because I had to uninstall iTunes and go back to the old version due to a bug
in the newest version that bombed iTunes when it tried to access Gracenote; thus no loading
could be done on my Nano. Now, since the Rel 3 of the OS is incompatible with the back
release, I can’t get iTunes to access the Touch. Solution, is load up my Nano, update
iTunes, and forget about putting anything on the Nano until the Gracenotes bug is fixed.
Meanwhile, I’ll update to the current release to use my Touch. Surely there must be a
better way but Apple knew of no way to keep two versions of iTunes on one PC. I’m
WXP, not apple and all my images are .jpg. Nothing tricky about them. . . some are
edited by Photoshop 7 and some are directly from my camera.
Any suggestions on how to escalate these seemingly high level problems to Apple?

  22. David C. Says:

Geri66, what is the extension on the pictures? I have a mac and I didn’t have any problems. Just plugged in my iPod and had iTunes copy them over to my iPod Touch. What is the average file size on each photo as well?

  23. Paul Snape Says:

Hi, I’m having a slightly different problem to the rest, every time I sync a new set of photos, they delete the previous ones from my touch! Any ideas?

  24. MIke Says:

Are you using a mac or windows Paul?

  25. Shaun Says:

  27. Nick Says:

k well i know how to do that but when i go to add them it says…”some of your photos including “001.jpd” were not copied to the ipod because they cannot be used.” i used my digital camera and they were pictures that were saved on my computer. any ideas???????? need help

  28. ray Says:

whenever i click the ipod icon in itunes it just brings me to a license agreement page which i agree to and save but still can never get past that screen…..could u help me out

  29. LUIS Says:

yes! im having the same problems with the ipod saying the pics a re not viewable. i have a hp with vista on it, and my pic sizes are 1000 + kb because they are from my camera. the format obviousle is .jpg the most common one. so yea if there is some patch or some way to make the pics go into the ipod then i would love to recieve an email about it, also i would like to know if it is true thats only in the mac that the photo section works. because if it is im returning this baby lol.

    thanks happy new year

  32. Luis Says:

god how can I be so blind and didn´t noticed the photo tab I was about to download Photoshop haha thanks mate!!!

  33. sentinel Says:

i dont know if its just me or every user of ipod touch has this problem. the thing about syncing the photos is that the current photo contents of the ipod gets deleted everytime you add new batch of photos. Is there a way to prevent this? I gets so depressing why does ipod designed that way?

  34. NoCalGal Says:

so back to Luis’ question… when iTunes is opened and the iTouch shows in ‘devices’, those tabs are NOT showing up. Any advice? Is there something I’m not doing correctly or do I need to call the Apple folks (hang out on hold for the afternoon)? hoping someone can help me.

  35. Hunita Says:

Hi Already worked out how to put photos on – made a new folder and just selected that one. However, now need to know how to remove them. Want a change! Is the only way to erase all contents and settings? Seems rather drastic!

  36. Kathleen Says:

Same problem – no tabs showing up. No photo tab. I’ve gone into preferences and nothing is showing. Can anybody help?

  37. Greg Says:

For you having trouble syncing photos its because your names are to long (ex2) the file system MAC OS uses can only see normal characters and no symbols such as -. Where as NTFS can support the longer filenames and certain special characters. Also someone mentions it only working from FAT filesystems thats because FAT has the same restrictions that ex2 has NTFS is the newest and supports better labeling

  38. tj Says:

OK, when I try to load pics or music I dont get the option of where I want to get the items from until I click a lil thing telling me I will lose all of the items alreayd on there first. I get that inbetween your step 2 and 3 … what do I do? I had a few songs and when I DL’d one from itunes it deleted the others I had! HELP this things is about to go to the trash compactor!

  39. sunil Says:

Thanks for the infor on this site

  40. kb Says:

same prob about syncing the photos. the current photo contents of the ipod gets deleted everytime you add new batch of photos.

Please someone answer why and how to solve.

    Thanks,

  41. craig Says:

What about bypassing iTunes completely…using Vista, the moment I fire up iTunes I lose my DVD/CD drives and have to go into the registry and then reboot to get them back. I’m sure people are going to blame Windows, but until then, I just dont use iTunes. Is there a way to get photos to the iTouch without it? (BTW, I use MGTek to get music to the iPod and it works great)…

  42. petrina Says:

If it was that easy I would have done it hours ago. My photo tab is grayed out. Only by pressing sync first, which then will delete all existing photos can I proceed. I have an ipod-touch which says the same for trying to add movies if i press syn it will delete all my tv shows songs and more. Do you know why? Apple site no help at all.

  43. jenny Says:

how do you set up where you can put videos upp and syn thm into the ipod touch

  44. ramone Says:

    Wow,

You are such a retard. Everyone knows how to sink photos unless their handicapped. What they want to know is how to add photos without syncing, so they can get all their family and friends photos that they want. duh.

  45. amber Says:

I have a different problem with the photos. I have figured out how to upload multiple albums, but one and only one of the 8 albums uploaded had the pictures in a completely different order than what they are in my PC. It is a album that needs to be viewed in a specific order and on my PC-correct order, on my itouch- mixed up? Help!

  46. francesca Says:

this is very helpful. i didnt even know about that photos tab =)

  47. Mike Says:

I am experiencing the same problem as Amber. I prepared a sepaerate folder containg those photos that I wanted to download to my iPod touch. I made sure that the photos in the new folder were in the order I wanted then in. The folder downloaded OK to the touch but the photos are completely jumbled up with no logic to the order. It’s a mess and makes a nonsense of any side show which moves from one subject to another. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  48. tim Says:

the problem i am having is that all of my photos are on my laptop, but my latop’s motherboard has broke, i have also just broken up with my partner, and want to delete some pictures but i dont want to loose all of the existing pictures i had on there as there is no longer a way of getting them back, so is there a way of deleting one or two pictures without sincing my ipod touch, also i need a way of adding more pictures without deleting the ones i already have

do you have any idea how i can do this?

  49. Hohepa Says:

I have found one way to get around the problem of itunes ignoring some photos or movies when adding to itunes library or when synching. Now every photo is synched without displaying any artifacts or distortion. Every movie is accepted. I have iPod classic and Windows XP. In itunes I enabled disk use for my iPod. In My Computer I create directory on iPod hard drive and copy all my photos to that directory . Then I add those photos to itunes library not from my PC directory but from the newly created iPod directory, then sync. Works every time. I do the same for movies because itunes doesn’t accept them from my PC directory either.

  50. kahili Says:

I just found out a pretty nice program that actually transfers your iPod pics from and to the computer. And it works with the iPhone too!

Have a look at it. It’s worth it: http://www.copytrans.net/copytransphoto.php

  51. Vic Says:

Mike: In order to have your photos on the Touch display in the order you prefer, go to your folder(s) containing the photos, and then put the following in front of the description for the first photo you want to see. For example, if you want to see “David.jpg” first, rename the photo “AAADavid.jpg”. If you want to see “Alice.jpg” next, rename the photo “AADAlice”. The Ipod Touch sorts the photos alphabetically. If you didn’t put the letters in front of the photo names, the Touch would display “Alice.jpg” first, and then “David.jpg” second, etc. The reason why I use three letters preceeding the photo name (AAA) is to make sure that I don’t run out of letters when I have 75 or 100 photos in each folder. The reason why I use AAA for my first photo, and AAD for my second, and AAG for my third is because in the event that I want to insert an additional photo at a later date (For example- Billy.jpg), and I want it to be displayed as the second photo between David and Alice, I would simply rename the photo “AACBilly”, and when I flipped through the pictures I would see David as photo 1, Billy as photo 2 and Alice as photo 3. What you are currently experiencing on your touch is the alphabetic sort which shows Alice first, Billy second and David 3rd — and no matter what order the photos are in your folder, the touch will still display them alphabetically. Please excuse the length of this post — I just wanted to be as clear as possible. Hope this helps!

I am not technically challenged. I have had other MP3 players and know how to move files and music and pictures around, and I’ve even figured out how to do the basic “sync” on my ipod- BUT- how do I add just one file/picture/song anything from say, a friend’s computer WITHOUT it deleting everything that’s there?

  118. anns Says:

I see others have posted by problem, but I don’t see any answers. I
want to upload a small album of photos to iPod Touch. If the iPod is connected and I’m in iTunes, I see the window with the tabs. I can see my iPhoto albums listed, but they’re in grey. The only active button is the one that would sync all my thousands of photos, which I don’t want to do. Why can’t I activate the button for a specific iPhoto album? thanks

  119. Clare Says:

Anns, you need to tick the ;sync photos from’ box at the top and it then give you the options to choose your photos.

I don’t know if this is helpful but this is what I did. I had the same problem, everytime I was adding pictures the ones that were on the iPod were gone.
If you already have pics on your iPod that means you have the folder named iPod Photo Cache. Copy your photos in this folder, you can make different folders in it of course. Make sure that when you hit apply the folder from the pod will sync is iPod Photo Cache.
I know my English is not very good but I hope you’ll understand. Bye.

  136. Burt Says:

I have a 2nd gen. touch & try to avoid itunes as much as possible. To get a few pictures at a time onto your touch, you can do this:
Email the picture to yourself. When you have the picture open on the touch, tap and hold your finger on it, and you’ll get a “Save Image” dialog that lets you store the picture in the “Saved Photos” folder on the touch.

You can also do the tap and hold on any image in Safari, so if you have your pictures on the web (like in flickr) you can do the same thing.

As a Blackberry Curve owner and long time Microsoft user I have to say the itouch is truly a slick little device. However, look at all the posts asking how to do such basic things or how impossible they make it to import “didn’t pay Apple for” data. Oh, don’t get me started on itouch OS upgrade fees.

Problem is Apple’s hardware proprietary strategy, its laughable laptop prices will be its demise when it comes to increasing market share. Is it the inability of Apple’s developers or their marketing folks myopic view of reality that’s the problem?

The itouch only supports one photo library???

You can’t import existing MP3 files off another brand MP3 player???

Sure the itouch is really slick but Apple makes it impossible to use it to replace existing tools/toys. Bang bang bang….Is this mike on??

  153. Marisa B. Sears Says:

Thank you for the Guide To Adding/Syncing Photos to iTouch. I had been trying and was having trouble getting this.

Your site was a big help!

  154. tom Says:

Thank you for the helpful info. I still have a problem: I can’t see the names of the photos. I have lots of students pics and I’ve named the photos after the students in order to quickly find them back. Unfortunately the iPod touch doesn’t seem to display text info about the photos, which is a bit of a bummer. Do you know a workaround?

  155. Judy Says:

Fine tutorial with one problem… if you don’t get the synching options bar, then what…? I saw it once, the first time the unit was attached to the USB port and then never again. Convoluted and unnecessarily complicated.
