iPod Touch: How to Manually Add NES ROMs

For those of you who have had no luck with the NES ROMs source which automatically adds the most popular NES ROMs this guide is for you.

In order manually add NES ROMs you need a program that will allow you to SSH into your iPod Touch.

Mac users should use Fugu. You can get Fugu at http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/.

Windows users should use Putty, which you will find at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/.

The below screen shot is from Fugu, since I have a mac. If you are using Fugu you should see this screen. It will be very similar for Putty.

Where it says connect to you will put in your iPod Touch’s IP address. You can find this on you iPod by click on settings, then Wi-Fi. Now click the blue arrow next to the network name and you will get your IP address. For the username put in root. The port is 22. When asked for a password put in alpine.

To manually copy over NES ROMs go to the Media folder.

Once you are in the Media folder go to the ROMs folder.

Next you should see the NES folder.

Simply copy the ROMs you have downloaded into this folder.

If you don’t have any ROMs and are wondering where to get those, I’ve got you covered.

You can find the most popular ROMs at these 4 sites:

1: http://www.theoldcomputer.com/Libara…ms_summary.htm
2: http://www.freeroms.com/ then click NES
3: http://www.coolrom.com/roms/nes/
4: http://www.romnation.net/srv/roms/nes.html

As always remember to only download ROMs of the games you actually have purchased.

is the fugu program steps the same as putty?

The steps ate almost exactly the same, same password, username, and port number. Once you’ve SSH into your iTouch the folders names above are exactly the same.

O-M-G…it says failed. i cannot connect to the ipod through putty.
    1. YES I HAVE PUT IN IP ADDRESS OF IPOD
    2. I TRIED THE SOURCE, THEN DOWNLOAD A ROM, AND AND AND THEN WENT TO NES. it said there were no roms in it. so basically…

i cant add manually because it won’t let me access my files through putty, or cuteftp. and i downloaded the source and chose the rom i wanted (downloaded it) and then i went to NES.app and nothing was there.

  13. Juan Says:

When I use Putty I get:

    Putty Fatal Error:
    Network Error: Connection Refused
    Port is at 22

  14. Josh Says:

I’ve done this and many other ways and when I go under the /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/NES in Cuteftp it shows that I have all these roms there on the iPod, but when I got to play them under the NES emulator it says no NES ROMs were found still. Anybody have any idea what I could do?

  15. Pat Says:

Hi i have problems with putty as well – it never asks for log or pass, there seems to be no entry field for it where you enter the IP address, port, etc… I have tried WinSCP as well with no reseults.

I get network error: connection refused

Just to clarify, the connection is to be made over Wifi, correct? Or do i need my ipod connected via USB?

  16. Pat Says:

ok i solved my connection refused error: you need ssh client installed on your ipod/phone

I followed this page from step 12 (the previous steps i had already done)

    http://www.hackthatphone.com/73/iphone_install_ssh_windows.html

Uploaded the roms to the correct folder, restarted ipod by holding 5 sec then sliding red bar, and roms are showing up and working!

  17. Joseph Says:

I’m having the same problem as Josh, “The NES emulator it says no NES ROMs were found still”… it gets me frustrated.

  19. major problem.... Says:

wifi for my ipod and my mac at the same time ?

how??doesn’t seem to work for me

  20. Zet Says:

Do you have open SSH installed? If not install it and turn SSH on.

  21. Alex Says:

    /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/NES

Make sure you have OpenSSH installed on your iPod before all of this.

[1] Download & install WinSCP (google it).
[2] Connect your iPod to Wi-Fi. Find your iPod’s IP (blue arrow).
[3] Connect to your iPod with WinSCP. The hostname is your iPod’s IP. Port 22, username is “root”, password is “alpine” (without the quotes).
[4] Download some NES roms. Google them. If they’re in a .zip file, extract them.
[5] Take the .nes file(s) and put them in the folder NES mentioned. If the folders aren’t there, make ‘em. Pay attention to capitalization.
    [6] Have fun.

  22. major problem.... Says:

i do have open ssh (by the way there isn’t any icon for this thing right?)

anyway still aint workin… my wifi ip adress is the same for my ipod and for my computer…

heres what Fugu tells me “ssh: connect to host ++++++++++port 22 : connection refused”

the one that finds out whats my problem will gets my eternal thanx

  23. Jordan Says:

ALex used your method and got an error it said message refused any ideas??

  24. Jordan Says:

it says my roms are in the NES folder on the ssh but yet on my ipod still saysNo roms found please upload rooms to /var…

  25. Anonymous Says:

    @ Jordan

If your running 1.1.3 you need to move them to a different directory.

Look at the FAQ, it tells you where they need to go.

  26. Alex Says:

Can I suggest you do as I did as I had such problems with my itouch over getting this to work, at one stage I was locking up.
Delete the NES folder and any NES games you have put in there to try, uninstall the emulator and reboot your pod.
Now go back to scratch, install emulator.
I also found that you do one thing at a time and reboot each time, put emulator in, reboot, make new folder names ROMs/NES reboot.
    Add a game, reboot
    check if the game works

  27. lonman06 Says:

A lot of people seem to be having problems with getting the ROMs to be found. The main problem is because the newest version of nes.app looks for the ROMs in a different place. The new place that your ROMs need to be is: var/media/ROMs/NES
ROMs must be spelled exactly the same way with the lowercase “s”

  28. Jordan Says:

if figured out the problem with my NES now i need help with my GBA emulator. the programs are in the correct file based on the location listed underneath the error yet none of my ROMs are available to play??
    NE body!!
    Need HElp!!

[...] What can those of you who are having problems do? The answer is, you’re going to have to create the new file path EXACTLY as you see it above. This includes the proper capitalization. You can do this by downloading Mobile Finder in your installer.app or using any program to SSH into your iPod Touch. For the two programs I like, as well as for a guide of how to SSH, look at this post. [...]

  30. Amanda Says:

can anyone help me change /var/root/Media/ROMs/NES TO /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/NES.. I have an NES file and I have mobilefinder installed.

To manually copy over NES ROMs go to the Media folder.

    Stupid question; Where is this?

  37. Alexander Says:

Hey OK, I know this is going to sound stupid compared to all of your technical questions, but when I type in the username and port, it takes me to enter a password, the password alpine is refused, why would that be happening?

  38. Alexander Says:

never mind, I realized it was a lowercase r on root, sorry for posting randomness then
