Lonman06 Presents: Hacking the iPod Touch Made Insanely Simple

iPod Touch: Jailbreak and 1.1.3

January 15, 2008 · 26 Comments

As many of you have already seen when you connected your iPod Touch to iTunes today, firmware 1.1.3 is now available. Unlike the upgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 there are some noticeable differences from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 that many will want to have.

First off and most noticeable is that the iPod Touch dock has been changed to exactly match the dock of the iPhone.

Second, as noted by Steve Jobs’ in his keynote address, 5 new apps for the iPod Touch: Mail, Stocks, Notes, Weather, and Maps.

The updated software will be available to existing users for a $20 upgrade fee. I know a lot of people are very upset about this. But if you have jailbroken your iPod you have had all of these for quite some time now free of charge.

The third cool feature is the ability to change the order of icons on your home screen. To do this all you have to do it click on an icon and hold down your finger until it begins to shake. Once it starts to shake you can drag it to wherever you want.

The last feature is the ability to bookmark webpages on your home screen. Once you have done this an icon from the webpage will appear on your home screen and you can access the webpage from it.

Now I know everyone is wondering “Can this new version be jailbroken”?

I can say with 99.9% certainty YES, but it may take a little time and may involve downgrading back to 1.1.1 and upgrading to 1.1.3. I think the new features will leave many wanting to jailbreak to 1.1.3, which is very different than 1.1.2 (I never even wasted time upgrading to 1.1.2 since there were no real differences).

Once a method is available I will post it here, so check back often!

** UPDATE ** I just found out that all the cool features above are only available if you pay the $20. If you do not pay and still upgrade to 1.1.3 you will not see any really differences, just some bug fixes. The one thing you do get is the iPhone dock.

Jailbreak 1.1.3 Status: COMPLETED - Waiting on SDK - A new file has been found in the Media folder of the iPod touch, this is the folder where the new apps are downloaded to. Some believe that this may eventually be hacked. It is unknown if this will have anything to deal with a future 1.1.3 Jailbreak.

Here are the file names:

Manifest.plist
Manifest.plist.p7b
nikita_receipt.plist
nikita_receipt.plist.sinf

**NEW UPDATE** 7:18 EST Jan. 16 - This is taken from GSM.com and is the first step in Jailbreaking 1.1.3:

I can finally confirm about iPhone 1.1.3 unlocked ok at 8:30PM 15/01/2008 by our team and many help from GeoHot from US, Imth from VN, and some experts about iPhone from Hackint0sh forum ! Great thanks to those awesome guys.

This method is hardware method. So have to open phone.

Status now is:
Unlock the iPhone with firmware 1.1.3 (baseband 4.03.13)
Downgrade the phone to 1.1.2 then jailbreak it for normally using.
Phone will work at: firmware 1.1.2 and baseband 4.03.13.

We are still researching on Unlock and keep the firmware 1.1.3 (mean jailbreak 1.1.3)

** UPDATE** 12 EST Jan. 19

JailBreak 1.1.3 is real
yes, thats’s real, done together by iphone dev team and elite team.
nobody plans to release it until Apple releases SDK.

The SDK is due to come out sometime in February, so it looks like we will have to wait until then to see the 1.1.3 Jailbreak.

That’s all I have for now, but at least it’s a start.

$20 for something iPhone users get for free?!? This is insane. I’m sticking with my 1.1.2 jailbroken iTouch for the time being.

    I agree…

    Why should we pay.

I think a lot of people feel this way and for this reason a lot will wait for a 1.1.3 jailbreak to come out.

I have personally downloaded the $20 upgrade to check it out. The features I have listed above are all very cool, but one thing does really bug me: Why do we have to shell out $20 when iPhone users get the upgrade and the applications for free?

While $20 isn’t a great deal of money, I think it is more principal at this point.

This is from Apple representatives on the show floor during today’s speech:

Apple representatives on the show floor have confirmed that pre-MWSF08 iPod touch owners who are looking to add the iPhone applications Mail, Stocks, Weather, Notes, and Maps will be paying the $20 fee regardless of whether they recently purchased the touch, or bought it on day one. Those who have purchased in the past 14 days have the option to return and repurchase the touch from a retail Apple Store, however, the 10% restocking fee will apply, costing a minimum of $29.90 for the touch.

People keep saying “why should we pay $20 for something the iphone gets for free?” correct. BUT - ALL NEW IPOD TOUCHES shipping from Apple now have the ‘$20 upgrade’ pre-installed.

So why should we pay $20 for something that all new ipod touch owners get for free? that is the question.

  • Notw // January 16, 2008 at 10:35 am

Anyone who purchased an iPod Touch on or after December 27, 2007 is entitled to a free upgrade to 1.1.3. I guess that leaves all those who got theirs for christmas out of luck. Convenient, isn’t it?

  • Peter // January 16, 2008 at 11:50 am

I did upgrade, actually purchased twice and have fed back to the Store for a credit. I of course ‘lost’ the 3rd party apps and Installer. But the apps are upgraded (well Mail, & Maps). I have been thinking. When Apple release their SDK in Feb legitimising the developers efforts we should see a way of installing 3rd party apps. Look at Widgets - you get them off the Apple Website. I suspect the same with the iPhone/touch and in this way Apple can check that there is no malwear which could upset their relationship with the Phone companies. Until the SDK in released we will not know how Apple will handle this.

Personally I think £12 in the UK is not too high a price to pay but suspect it is a bit of sour grapes from SJ.

Off the check out the Developer area to see if there is any more news of the SDK details.

I think like most others that we will see a jailbreak for 1.1.3 as well.

As for the whole $20 issue I would have been ok paying for it if everyone else did ad well. But the fact that people who buy the iPod touch now get it for free us very unfair.

  • iStrife // January 16, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Well this is ummm stressful. You’d think that seeing as we payed quite a fair bit of money for our iPods in the first place, we wouldn’t be charged for what is being essentially handed out for free for new owners.
Also, for those of us who don’t have a credit/debit card or watever, we have no choice at all. No update :|
Pfft I’m just gona sit this one out, until Apple either provide it as a free update or I get a card :/

  • iTouchGuy // January 16, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Wohooooo, looks like we are already one step closer to a 1.1.3 jailbreak. These guys keep getting faster and faster at this.

Maybe we will have it by the weekend?

  • iTouchGuy // January 16, 2008 at 7:31 pm

As for the app package, right now it has been pulled from iTunes. When you click on the link from Apple’s page and Itunes opens there is no purchase option, only a remind me later button. I don’t think this means it will be free, I think this is more likely in response to a great number of problems many users have been experiencing trying to get the purchased apps on the ipod.

ITG, in order to see the purchase open you must be running iTunes 7.6 and have already upgraded to 1.1.3.

  • Danny // January 16, 2008 at 10:39 pm

  • NsN // January 18, 2008 at 2:27 pm

when the fuck is some one going to figure out how to hack the 1.1.3 firmware or how to downgrade to 1.1.1. This is all BULLSHIT. when we bought our iTouchs and iPhones we didnt buy the actual product we just bought the “apple” name. apple is so damn money hungry, charging us 20 dollars for some bull shit crap that we all had for free with jail break, now they FORCE you to upgrade to 1.1.3. WTF!?!?!??!

  • Dmitry // January 19, 2008 at 5:24 am

Downgrade is available for few days already. Here it is
“Tutorial Downgrade 1.1.3 -> 1.1.1 WINDOWS] How it works
    ——————————————————————————–

Found this tutorial at iphone-forums.de (german)
    I’ll try to translate it:

    1. Connect iPhone with PC
    2. Download iPhuc http://**********.com/files/84214672/iPhuc.zip
    3. Unpack & start iPhuc.exe
    4. Type in “enterrecovery” and wait until iPhone enters Recoverymode (Notice be sure you are on iTunes 7.5 and its running while doing this tut!)
    5. iPhuc window should say: #:
    (If not, restart iphuc.exe)
    6. Type in “filecopytophone WTF.s5l8900xall.RELEASE.dfu”
    7. Type “cmd go”
    8. Wait until iPhone Screen turns white and iTunes recognizes a device connected to it
    9. Hold down shift + restore -> choose FW 1.1.2 -> let it finish -> do the same and choose 1.1.1 fw
    10. Use iBrickr to kick the phone out of the DFU and go on as usual

    All fame goes to puma_hh & kIREmK @ iphone-forums.de

Notice: This Tutorial won’t downgrade the BB!!!”

So i was so stupid to upgrade to 1.1.3 and came back safely. :)

  • Jay // January 19, 2008 at 12:17 pm

They aren’t forcing you to upgrade to 1.1.3, but if you want all the new features you are going to have to.

  • Bob Marley // January 19, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Actually I was forced, in the process of “restoring” my iTouch it downloaded and installed the v1.1.3 update.

  • bob marley // January 19, 2008 at 9:22 pm

So Simple Your Grandma Could Do It! You should change your slogan, to ya, if some people weren’t holding out for an SDK.

  • Fraggy // January 22, 2008 at 4:58 am

My itunes has downloaded 1.1.3 for my iPod but I chose not to install it cause of my apps. I did’nt pay for it neither, is this something every one gets or have Apple chosen to give it for free now?

  • Adam // January 22, 2008 at 11:13 am

So if i upgraded to 1.1.3 today which i did, Will i eventually be able to downgrade? Can i still play emulators when they come out?

  • Jackson // February 22, 2008 at 4:05 pm

I am outraged that Apple is charging early buyers of the iPod Touch $20 for a system update that ought to be free.

While I understand Apple’s decision to charge money for the new applications the new $20 “application pack” also includes a SYSTEM UPDATE in the form of the home page editing, web clips, and lyrics features. All of these are updates to the currently existing iPod Touch software and NOT new applications, which means that they ought to be free to all users of the iPod Touch.

Adding insult to injury these applications are all hidden in the 1.1.3 system update, a whopping 104.4mb file that all users must download if they want to fix bugs in the system. These applications can only be used when you pay Apple $20 to “unlock” them, but even if you decide not to buy them they stay on your iPod taking up precious space that could be used for songs, videos, or photos.

Apple is normally wonderful when it comes to providing system support and updates, but having them shaft early adopters and loyal fans like this is offensive and shows that Apple has absolutely no regard for the iPod Touch community.
