The exciting new PwnageTool has been released for the iPod Touch, as well as the iPhone. This will no doubt make customizing your iPod Touch much easier and open up many more customizable options in the future. The bad news (at least for the time being) is that it is only available for a mac. A windows version is being developed and should be released very soon. I am going to answer a few questions about the PwnageTool below, since I am some of you don’t have any idea what it is.
What exactly does the PwnageTool do?
The PwnageTool will basically allow you do do anything that you could have done by jailbreaking, but it opens up many other possibilities as well. What this program does, is it allows you to create a custom firmware.
Why would I want to do this when I can just use ZiPhone or iJailbreak?
The big advantage of the PwnageTool has is that is is not a firmware specific hack. Once you have ran the PwnageTool on your iPod Touch any new firmware updates can be jailbroken immediately. That is right no more waiting for a new firmware hack to come out.
I have heard the 2.0 firmware beta has been leaked. Is this true, and if I use the PwnageTool can I run it on my iPod touch?
It has been leaked, but since it would be highly illegal for me to post it, I can’t. If you did manage to get a hold of the leaked firmware, the PwnageTool would allow you to run it.
Is it possible to restore my iPod Touch back to its original form after installing this program?
Yes, all you have to do is restore it from iTunes.
Where can I get this program?

NOTE: I have not installed this program on my iPod Touch yet. But for anyone out there who does install the PwnageTool, please leave a comment and inform us all of how you like it.

Yea…I can’t wait for the windows version to come out…but I have a quick question: I have a lot of apps on my jailbroken phone, does pwnage have a feature where I can back all of it up on my computer, so after I pwn it, I can still have my same apps. Another reason I need this is because I have spent quite the long time over the past couple of months putting ROMs on my own sendspace account, and I have a lot, and since sendspace deletes your files after so long, I would have to do it all over again. Could anyone give me any ideas on how to do this!?!

I’m curious on this as well
Have 16g iPhone hacked with ziphone.
Is running this gonna have any issues?
For those here reading this, I recommend the boss tool to free up some of the 300mb partition on the iPhone. I really panicked a few days back because my phone was not installing programs & i was having severe issues getting gpsphone to work
Peace

BE VERY CAREFUL, someone on the iPod Touch Fans forums bricked their iPod Touch with this. As far as I know they have yet to figure out why

I did it this morning. Worked perfectly first go.
I decided that it would be best to go back to a fresh 1.1.4 before i started the pwn(backing up all my roms of course) . From there i found my .ipsw file. Pwnd my ipod (worked first go). Made a custom .ipsw from the 1.1.4 firmware. restored my ipod to this custom ipsw (note: there is no need to put it in recovery for this). Restore went perfectly and then i had a pwnd ipod, jailbroken 1.1.4 with intaller app installed and a happy face!
note about the pwnageTool. For ipod touch firmware there is basically no options when making your custom version of 1.1.4. It will just make a 1.1.4 that is already jailbroken as far as i can tell. For iphone there is all that sim unlock, unlock baseband and neuter bootloader (i dont know what this is yet).
i had it jailbroken with Ziphone before. It wasnt going well. Ishare wouldnt install and some apps would take ages to startup. After pwning ishare works and all apps are going well.
…having said all that itunes just wanted to update…hope that doesnt mess anything up :S

Neuter bootloader – This will enable “Bootneutering” to the baseband firmware allowing custom firmware to be installed onto the iPhone baseband by convincing the iPhone that it is secure. Arbitrary secpacks and fls files will be accepted when the device is in this state. In order to use these features you will need to locate the two bootloader files. Please note, these files are not shipped with Pwnage Tool.

I did SSH my iTouch and saved the App‘s on my Mac. If I have to jailbreak it again, don‘t have to find all the programs again.
Hope that helps!
My iTouch is still ZiBroaken.
iTouch you

Is there any point in doing this on a 1.1.4 iPod touch?
April 4, 2008 at 6:57 pm |
hey again. Seems that my ipod went down to 0% from 100% battery overnight even though i didnt have any programs running or music going etc. Hopefully its not because i pwnd it. =S
really strange
April 4, 2008 at 7:32 pm |
thats messed up
April 4, 2008 at 8:40 pm |
@ Jon : The point of PWNing your iTouch/iPhone is to have the ability to create your very own Firmware. This means that you can restore from iTunes and already be Jailbroken, no more need for ZiPhone or iLiberty, etc. This also means that you will be able to have Apps installed the second you restore.

umm my ipod battery consumption seems to be normal now…

Ok that’s not bad. I don’t have a mac though (I wish I did)
April 6, 2008 at 12:19 pm |
hey guys you know customize 2.0 beta is on installer now right?
Its pretty cool. Has its own theme browser, takes over smbprefs new features… Etc
The only thing is that it doesnt let u use the stuff you got from installer and wateva u have as your current theme before you switched becomes your backup so there is no going back to stock
April 6, 2008 at 12:25 pm |
I wonder how fast it’ll take lonman to say something about this. He’s always like 15 minutes after I post something. It’s Like he’s always on.
April 6, 2008 at 6:17 pm |
thats not true about not going back to stock, my backup is 100% stock
April 6, 2008 at 10:57 pm |
lol Jon, I did see that customize 2.0 beta is now in installer. Saw it only a few minutes after you posted it here! I just can’t seem to keep up with you! I was thinking about posting something on it, but since it is still in beta I am going to wait until a full release. I haven’t given it a try yet, have you? If so, what did you think of it?
April 7, 2008 at 2:20 pm |
yes, right now I’m using it. Um the best thing about it is that it works for 1.1.3/4. It has a much better interface than 1.21 but sometimes it doesnt start up unless I restart the iPod with a full shut down. But yea, it still is in the beta so you have to expect a few problems. And T-Rock if you had a stock background and stuff before you uninstalled customize 1.21 modded and installed 2.0 beta, than you will definetly have an original backup.
But you know what, Im not thespicychicken so I don’t know whether its only me experiencing this or not. iTS THE BETA
April 7, 2008 at 2:23 pm |
oh and btw thespicychicken doesn’t respond to random email (which I sent to him) about his apps lol
April 7, 2008 at 9:13 pm |
so i downloaded pwnagetool but im not sure as what to do with it. is this just like a replacement for a jailbreak? so if i use my beta 2.0 firmware in it itll autmatically jailbreak my ipod in 2.0? lol sorry im kinda confused
April 8, 2008 at 5:33 pm |
i did not have a modded customize 1.21 before i installed 2.0
, the reason i have the backup is cause i got it from someone on ipodtouchfans forums. Also, if you do have a problem with it not loading, tap the screen a couple times rapdily when you open it, dont know why it helps but i saw some guy post about it on the ipodtouchfans forums and it seems tow ork
April 8, 2008 at 6:08 pm |
Ok i have everything done and it works but do i now have to jailbreak it? So i can get installer back on there? And also when i go to ISPW builder i can only use one of the 7 there which is the Dev team custom pictures
April 8, 2008 at 7:18 pm |
Yea thats what I heard works
thats also what they tell u to do when u first get the modded version. Maybe the modded version has something to do with it.

April 10, 2008 at 5:09 pm |
Hey before i did this i tried to back up my apps through SSH using Fugo and whenever i try to like to connect to my ipod it keeps saying that the Remote host has changed. Any1 know how to fix this?
April 12, 2008 at 10:51 am |
