At the Worldwide Developer Conference Keynote address Steve Jobs gave us a look at the new iPhone. I have seen countless summaries of today’s conference, but what can us iPod Touch users expect from the new firmware?
Below is a list of the new features in 2.0 that iPod Touch users can expect.
Contact searching – Yes
Complete iWork document support – Yes
Complete Office document support (now includes PowerPoint) – Yes
Bulk delete and move for Mail – Yes
Save images you receive – Yes
Scientific calculator in landscape mode – Yes
Parental controls – Yes
Language – Yes
Besides these new features is the all important new App Store. To get these third party applications you will need to purchase them. For everyone waiting for a Jailbreak, be very patient. It will likely be harder to Jailbreak the 2.0 firmware. Apple is working on ways to make hacking the 2.0 firmware much more difficult (which is why only the first two beta versions of 2.0 were successfully jailbroken), they do not want people getting these third party applications for free.
The set release time for 2.0 is early July. For those of you who have jailbroken iPods on 1.1.4, I would suggest not upgrading right away to 2.0. The 2.0 firmware will cost $9.95 for iPod Touch users and will be free for iPhone users.
For those who heard about the new pricing on the iPhone ($299 for the 16gb, while the 8gb iPod Touch is $399), don’t expect to see a price drop on the iPod Touch. The reason the iPhone price has been lowered is because AT&T will now make more on the monthly charges and will hand over some of that extra money to Apple to compensate for the lower iPhone prices. Since there is no subscription for the iPod Touch, the price will remain higher and we will have to pay to upgrade to the 2.0 firmware.
Be sure to check back for more updates on the Jailbreaking status for 2.0.
If you have any questions or comments head over to the forums and post them.
