This isn’t exactly a hack for the iPod Touch or anything, but with 2.0 looming over the horizon I think a lot of you will find this pretty cool.
Yesterday, Apple released a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 to developers. Inside the Read Me of the iTunes installer there was this:
Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store.

Apple reveals that they will be offering a free app on the App Store that allows you to remotely control iTunes in your home from your iPhone or iPod Touch. The application will presumably work under Wi-Fi to control playback of iTunes.
This is indeed a nice little surprise from Apple! With the release of iTunes 7.7 and firmware 2.0 your iPod Touch will also be a remote control for iTunes!
Head on over to the forums for more information!

Good post, Im kind of skeptical about this 2.0 firmware. ill definitely wait to download it, since it costs like 20 dollars for the ipod touch, and I wont have a jailbroken ipod right away xD

I think da upgrade is only $9.95 4 iPod touch. I would definetly update wen it comes out cuz 70% of da apps are free, or so I hear, and no app is over $3.00, but don’t quote me on dis since I’m not sure.

wen will 2.0 come out?
June 29, 2008 at 8:57 pm |

July 9, 2008 at 1:38 am |
the firmware is out before Friday, i believe as the iphone 3G is out on the very same day. Check out the video on the apple homepage it has some app demonstrations. or just youtube. “touch fighter iphone”, ” spore iphone” , and “monkey ball iphone”
enjoy all

I’m not quoting you to be offensive or anything, but just for the sake of people who want to know for sure.
“…and no app is over $3.00…”
As far as I know, there is no price limit for the apps on the store. On iTunes 7.7, many of the applications provided are well over $3, for instance the English Dictionary and Thesaurus by Ultralingua is available for $29.99. Fortunately though, most of the apps are free

I know they released iTunes 7.7 today, and the iPhone 2.0 firmware is out and about.. but for the love of me, the iTunes won’t grab the 2.0 firmware for my iPod Touch.
Is anyone else able to get the app store working on their ipod touch, because I’m not…. and what gives? I paid for the 1.1.4 firmware. Am I going to have to pay to upgrade again?
It really sucks being an early adopter for Apple.

July 11, 2008 at 8:00 am |
it says that the store is unavailale…which means that I can’t get my update. I don’t know why this is happening, it is now 9 fucking o’clock here in nj…can anyone else get 2.0 to download at all?
July 11, 2008 at 8:28 am |
I’m also having the same problem. I have the ipod touch, and it’s now 9:30 here (EST). I read that it was going to be released today at 8 am, but it still isn’t working. When I try to download the update, it says “iTunes store unavailable”. I guess Apple is doing some sort of maintenance, and I assume it’ll be up soon.

I have 2.0 running on a 16gb Touch. Downloaded some free programs from the App Store to test things – AIM, Currency, Google, WeatherBug, Molecules, BoxOffice, Bloomberg. They downloaded directly to the iPod Touch with no problems, but they all shut down within seconds of being launched. No error messages. Hopefully an updated O/S will be available soon to fix this bug. The mail program improvements in 2.0 are very useful.

there’s a VERY EASY WAY to upgrade to 2.0 on the ipod touch but for free.
i hacked itunes myself.
1. you need to have a jailbroken ipod touch.
2.you need the installer
3. download an app that can change the firmware from 1.1.4 to 2.0.
4. hold the home and screen lock button and wait til the screen goes completely black.
5. turn on the ipod and your firmware should appear on itunes as 1.1.4 then downgrade to 1.1.4
6. it will appear on itunes as 1.1.4 then it will say that there is a new update as 2.0, and click update.
it will only download it, it won’t buy the update.
and you’ll receive it for free.
it takes a while so have some patience.
let me know if you have any questions.
YOU CANNOT JAILBREAK YOUR IPOD TOUCH AFTER YOU UPGRADE IT!
so make a choice.

Just a warning – since upgrading my touch to v2.0 (and immediately before that upgrading iTunes to v7.0) – now whenever I plug in my iPod touch, there is a delay of over a minute before anything happens (ie device recognised, synchs). There is a green and yellow bar in the top right corner, in the search box, which seems to be there in error.
Anyone else had this problem – and know how to fix it??
July 15, 2008 at 12:29 pm |
No, I haven’t had the sync error. I did get the new Apps working by rebooting the iPod Touch a second time. The most useful App I’ve found (for Mac users) is File Magnet which finally allows files to be transferred to the iPod Touch/iPhone.
