iPod Touch: Jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G?

I know there are a decent amount of you out there who have just received the 2G iPod Touch as a gift this holiday season and want to jailbreak it.  Unfortunately as of right now I am sorry to report that there is no jailbreak for the iPod Touch 2G available as of today. However there is some good news as well, a group called Cronic dev does appear to be making significant progress on a 2G jailbreak.

Of course I know that everyone wants to know when Cronic dev plans to release a jailbreak for the 2G iPod Touch, but it is anyone’s guess at this point, especially since they haven’t reported full success in jailbreaking a 2G iPod Touch yet.

I will continue to monitor the latest news on the status of the 2G iPod Touch jailbreak, so continue to check back for updates.

At this time I just want to let alert those who are new to the jailbreaking world and have just joined the iPod Touch family to some of the advantages of a jailbroken iPod Touch.

Jailbreaking your iPod Touch allows much more customization. You can change the look of the home screen icons as well as the theme of your iPod Touch. If you really want to go crazy you can even change the look of the battery charging icon on the first screen you see when you are charging your iPod Touch.

Other advantages are the available of Cydia, which is a program that allows you to download free applications for your iPod that aren’t on Apple’s App Store. There is also a way to get applications that are required to be purchased from the App Store for free, but since that is illegal I can’t tell you how to do that here (I’m sure if you are motivated enough you can find out how!).

So if the brief description of the advantages of jailbreaking seem like something you may want to consider keep checking back for updates on Cronic dev’s progress of jailbreaking the 2G iPod Touch.

  1. John Says:

I just got my ipod touch 2g 16 gig and I think this is something I want to do, but am worried that it will screw up my ipod touch. Is it possible that I can really mess up my ipod doing this jailbreak thing?

  2. George Says:

No you’ll be fine, you can always completely erase everything and worse that can happen is you have everything erased but you could just resync on itunes, i highly recommend you do though, much more freedom i think

  3. Cxxc Says:

George is right, the worst that can happen is that you need to do a force restore on iTunes. It will be worth the risk to have a jailbreak on your 2G ipod touch imo.

  4. Freds Says:

I can’t wait for this jailbreak, I want to change the theme like I have seen screenshots on 2.0 on the first gen ipod touches.

  5. Jon Says:

hey guys, it’s Jon from the forums. It’s a dead zone in there. No one says a word. Either they’re all waiting patiently in anticipation or they’re dead. I’m still checking it everyday. If anyone wants to join the forums go right ahead. I’m always glad to help, and I’m sure maybe the activity will liven the place up again. We’re all waiting for this jailbreak. Especially me.

  6. Curtis Says:

I really want to get super mario world for my brand new ipod touch, which I received for Christmas! That’d be a dream come true. Feel free to email me at mesaybang@gmail.com to let me know when I can jailbreak it. :]

Yes, I’m new to the ipod community.

  7. Curtis Says:

Oh, and generally how long does the jail breaking process take? When exactly did they begin working on this process? I just want to get an idea of if it would be worth my time to check back every day, week, or month or w/e.

In your opinion, is it usually about 1-2 weeks before completion, a few months, or what? If you can answer this, also let me know when they began developing. Thanks!

  8. George Says:

Well that’s not an easy question Curtis, generally every new update apple makes it harder for hackers to hack, this makes it much harder on the hackers, sometimes it only takes days or even weeks, but I think we will be seeing this jailbreak in about a week or two but I’m not sure.

  9. Nathaniel Says:

I’m pretty scared to jailbreak my iPod. I’m afraid it will crash or something and I can’t get it back. The worst thing I think about is dropping/breaking my iPod and the warranty would be void. Oh and if you search “jailbreak 2g iPod touch” on youtube, people tell you to use QuickPwn on a PC, and PwnageTool on Mac. Are these reliable programs?

  10. Ben Says:

Nathaniel- Dont worry about it, the only way you can void your warranty is if apple finds you have illegal software on it, which the only way for them to find out is if you send it to them for a fix such as messed up audio output or something, but dont worry, you will have time to unjailbreak (wipe all the memory then sync with itunes so its a normal ipod) then send it to apple if you need it to repair, since you are the one sending it.
Yes these are reliable programs, just watch the video and follow it step by step depending if you have a PC or MAC, a way to find out if this video is reliable is just by checking the comments on the page, but i think you will be fine.

PS- Breaking/Dropping your ipod wont void your warranty, thats what its for, so if it breaks or something in that year you can always get a new one, but i believe the first 6 months are free shipping to apple while the rest you have to pay to ship it to the apple store, correct me if im wrong.

  11. Curtis Says:

Ok, I’ll check back daily till Saturday, then start extending check-back times.

  12. Jonathan Says:

I can’t wait until the iPod Touch 2g jailbreak because i am looking forward to having the ability to play classic SNES games (Super Metroid!!) on my ipod.

  13. Curtis Says:

For me it’s mario I want!!

  14. Jonathan Says:

Yes I want mario games too and maybe zelda. Those are all classics that would be sweet on the ipod touch. I think you can also run ps1 games on a jailbroken ipod, but i dont kno how fast it is tho.

  15. Hi Hi Hi Says:

seems like that will never happen. I had an ipod touch 1g but it got stolen and i had it jailbroken and everything. now with the 2g ipod im like a sitting duck just waiting for the jailbreak but nothing is happening. 55. Jon Says:

Its out. But its tethered, which means you cant shut off your ipod after jailbreaking it. Its on the red snow website. Mine is done. If you understand command line u shouldnt have too much of a problrm with it.

  56. Curtis Says:

Jon, could you show me how to do it? contact me at mesayabg@hotmail.com

  57. Curtis Says:

  58. Mike Says:

An unthethered 2G jail break would be nice. I can tell its only a matter of time before they have it!

  59. Curtis Says:

jailbroke my ipod. It’s easy once you know how to do it, and there’s no problem with tethered. I never turn off my ipod anyways, and if it runs out of batteries big woop, you wouldn’t be able to turn it on anyways without going to a computer.

  60. Jon Says:

when is the untethered version of the jailbreak coming out? will it be easier and safer than the tethered version? (i tried to jailbreak the tethered version today and almost destroyed my computer. thats why i want to know if the untethered version is safer)

  65. leah Says:

when is the untethered version of the jailbreak coming out? is it easier and safer than the tethered version? (i tried to jailbreak my ipod touch 2g today with the tethered version of the jailbreak and it almost crashed my computer. that is why i want to know if the untethered version is safer than the tethered version)

  66. iPod user Says:

Jail breaking your iPod touch 2G literally gives you no advantage, at least for now. I jail broke mine today and right after then when I found out that you need to use the boot software to turn it ON after it has shut down, I immediately restored it to the original Firmware and will never jailbreak it again. It’s pathetic… Cydia has bunch of peace of crap there which are simply useless.

  67. yo Says:

i agree with leah. when is the untethered version of the jailbreak coming out? is it easier and safer than the tethered version?

  68. yo Says:

    any1 gonna answer??

  69. yo Says:

not coming to thid dite anymore

  70. sam Says:

my cousin, an independant software developer and hacker, has just created a full, untethered jailbreak for 2G. i did it and got installer and Cydia.

  71. sam Says:

it isnt completely reliable though. it bricked my friend’s 2G.

  72. Hamza Says:

Can u put up that software here ?

  73. Anonymous Says:

The untethered version is out, tutorials are all over you tube.. what i want is a FUCKING SNES ROMS SOURCE!!! ANYONE!!?

  74. Anonymous Says:

there is a jailbreak you doosh

  75. I-Blood-Hound-I Says:

Hey guys I’m I-Blood-Hound-I and I’m here to help. Jailbreaking is definitely one of the best, but most dangerous things you can do with an Itouch/Phone, heres the reality of a jailbreak… Jailbreaking grants complete freedom to your Ipod, such as added a backround behind your apps, getting 99% of the apps on app store 100% free, complete power to edit your ipod, such as changeing system fonts, colors, sizes. Chabgeing the looks of your keyboard and system apps like calculator. People unjailbreak because they dont know how to work a jailbroken ipod. The newest jailbreaks allow you to keep your apps, save a backup, and allow sync with Itunes. As in if you have cracked apps, stolen, you can upload them to itunes and download them on a different ipod, jailbroken or not. Now with great reward come great risk, there is a very small chance that your ipod can get froze, which in most cases, is fixable, but if some strange thing happens, then your ipod can get bricked. What being bricked means is that there is NO fix, it does no register on itunes, when connected to comp, says unknown usb device connected, and your Ipod is permanently done for. But you can do like i did and return it for A new one at the purchased store. WARNING: Do NOT turn in to Apple, they will find out your Ipod is jailbreaking and will charge you a fee… I am not reliable for any charges given. Well, thats all i have to say about jailbreaking an ipod, if you have questions, hit me up at anialation95@yahoo.com, hope i was of help :)
