The first thing I want to say is that I absolutely love my Blackberry Storm 2. That being said I have unfortunately had my fair share of problems with it, with the number one thing being random reboots.
I received my Blackberry Storm 2 the first week it launch and believe it or not I have already been through 8 of them! Each unit had a different set of problems, varying from a faulty headphone jack to a phone which simply wouldn’t turn on after 2 days use.
The 4th Blackberry Storm 2 that I received was perfect to me, the moment I turned it on I knew that I finally had received a properly working unit. Unfortunately 5 minutes later the phone restarted and I was quickly starting to second guess my original thoughts. Since this 4th unit didn’t seem to be plagued by all the other problems I have heard about (non-working send key, uneven screen…just to name a few) I decided I would stick with it for the time being and see how things went. After the first day I counted 3 random reboots the next day and 4 the following day after that. I was really starting to get frustrated.
I finally broke down and gave Verizon another phone call and they shipped me a 5th device. Long story short, the 5th device was damaged from shipping and i received 3 more after that one and all of them had some type of problem. I was still holding onto the “perfect” 4th unit (minus the random restart issue) when I starting thinking to myself about what could possibly cause the restarting. The only thing that came to my mind was the fact that the battery could be lose and for a short second it was popping out of place resulting in a restart.
I decided to test my theory and ended up putting 2 pieces of black electrical tape on inside of the metal battery door. I carefully placed the 2 pieces right on top of the black padding that was already there, but didn’t seem to be doing its job of holding the battery in place.
Well…it’s been 5 days now and (knock on wood) my phone has yet to restart since I applied the tape. Looks like I could have saved myself quite a bit of trouble with replacements if I had just tried this earlier.
So if anyone is having the random restart/reboot issue with their Blackberry Storm 2, I suggest giving this method a try and let me know how it works out for you!

so far it has worked for me. I used a cut up business card instead of tape though. Thanks!

Hey everyone. FIRST OFF, I AM NOT A TECHNICAL SUPPORT PERSON, I DONT WORK FOR A CELL PHONE COMPANY OR ANYTHING. I AM A NORMAL PERSON WHO GETS VERY CURIOUS AND I GET IRRITATED WITH SOFTWARE AND PROGRAMMING. With that said, lets move on. My name is Trevor. I signed a 2 year contract with Verizon Wireless 2 weeks ago, receiving the BlackBerry Storm 2, and i am already on my 3rd storm. The first one rebooted 2 or 3 times a day, and the sd card didnt stay secure. It kept disconnecting and reconnecting. I sent it back and I got another one. It too rebooted 2 or 3 times a day and the screen was messed up. So now I am on my 3rd one. And it too rebooted 2 or 3 times a day. Ive researched and looked at every possible remedy, from deleting applications(including Blackberry maps) that I dont use.
I have found 2 solutions that prevent the Storm 2 from rebooting. The first solution will not work if you are not with Verizon, but for those of those that are, try this.
REMEDY 1) REMOVE THE SIM CARD. If you are with Verizon Wireless, your BlackBerry Storm 2 does not require the SIM card to work. I am on my second day and it has yet to reboot while running without the simcard. If you are like me and plan to use the BlackBerry Storm 2 on another network, or already do, that wont work and you need another remedy. While looking through the remedies on the internet, I have read that there is supposedly supposed to be a new update that will fix the reboot situation, and upon thinking about it, I felt that maybe the current OS that I run may cause my crashing.
REMEDY 2) DOWNGRADE YOUR BLACKBERRY OS TO THE PREVIOUS VERSION. My BlackBerry Storm 2 came running version 5.0.0.1015 Bundle 1656. I downgraded and am at the end of my first day running this previous version and my Storm 2 hasn’t rebooted once since I downgraded. (I’m probably playing with fire by saying that, but IDC) These are step by step instructions that Verizon will tell you in order to update your device to the most current version, except that you are gonna downgrade. JUST TO QUELL ANY WORRIES OUT THERE, IF YOU DO THIS, YOU WILL NOT LOSE ANY OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION. I DID IT, AND ALL MY CONTACTS, TEXT MESSAGES, EMAILS AND APPLICATIONS ARE STILL INTACT IN MY DEVICE. 1: Using the BlackBerry Desktop manager, plug in your BlackBerry Storm 2. When it connects and is ready, it should show your phone and will tell you what version you are running. 2: Up in the top left corner of the main menu should be a tab that says DEVICE. Click on this tab. 3: Then it should drop down a list of options and you are gonna want to click on the link that says UPDATE MY DEVICE. 4: If you update your BlackBerry every time a new update comes update comes out, let it load, and then it will tell you that you run the most current version or that no updates are available. 5: Dont close this window, and in the bottom to the left is a tab that says VIEW OTHER VERSIONS. Click on it. 6: Now, if you run the most current version at the time of this post, then it will say that you run Version 5.0.0.1015 (Bundle 1656, Platform 4.2.0.442). Just check the box on the version under that one, which is Version 5.0.0.713 (Bundle 1206, Platform 4.2.0.275). Follow the instructions and let it do everything it does and DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR DEVICE UNTIL IT TELLS YOU TO. When it reboots and it tells you that you can unplug your device, then you now have the previous OS version installed.
I hope that this helps with anyone out there who have not tried this remedy or haven’t thought of it.

Hello Trevor how are you Guys? My name is Jason. I have sucessfully followed your proceedure and downgraded my phone. I had the same problem as everyone else with the restarting Storm 2. However it does not solve the problem cause the very next day it was back to its old tricks.

My problem is not Hardware it is software my battery and everything else checking out to be good. I never dropped my phone it never got wet either, I am almost ready to conclude that my problem is software. Are there any updates

As a follow up, I have had the same maddening problem with the restarts over and over – including interrupting a very important business conference call. However, I’ve taken the battery cover off and wiggled the battery – almost out – and my Storm 2 did not restart. That said, I don’t think that’s the issue – although something else might be shaking loose (a connection?) that’s aided by your “bandaid” method. Honestly, I prefer not to have a phone that I have to modify to work.
Feb 01, 2010 @ 12:33:01
My reboots seem to be isolated to taking images or recordings to the media card. It does seem on occasion, a “cigarette slap” amount of shake loosens the microSD card from the slot. Even the small thick padding doesn’t seem to keep it engaged 100% so if I take a video of myself and I manhandle the thing to spin it around and hold it up to get some video of me and a friend, it could tend to shake the media card loose.
As long as I keep the media card checked the phone doesn’t lock up. 3 weeks old.

Zehrah the exact same thing happens to my storm2 and the 2g isnt workin.. pls guys what should i do next pls
Mar 20, 2010 @ 13:59:41
Hi,
Can’t say that I’m having restart problems. But I read Zeharah’s problem and I think I know what’s the problem.
The problem is usually associated with the quality of data coverage. I’ve seen it happen when the coverage drops from 3 G to 2 G (or Edge) on networks which didn’t release Storm 2 officially.
You can contact your GSM company and ask the BlackBerry support guys to do “provisioning” for BlackBerry Storm 2 on their network. They can do this without problem and it doesn’t cost them anything, except the desire to be helpful.
Or you can go to the Mobile network options and under NW mode you can try selecting 2G instead of 3G and 2G. In some cases it fixed the problem.

I have the same problems with my phone restaring when I need to do something urgent, yesterday it restarted almost three times in 15m. I will definetly try the advice, if this does not work I will need to talk to my service provider
Mar 30, 2010 @ 02:20:50
I had a similar problem, except when I am roaming, my storm 2 keeps rebooting. But this is only under specific networks, and doesn’t happen with all providers. I think Moumen’s response is correct. I will try using 2g only next time I am on that network that causes the problem and will see how the phone reacts.

i love my new unlocked blackberry. it’s great, screen is better, internet is faster, games are more fun, all around it’s just a really practical phone. but it’s unlocked so it drops calls, all the dang time. I knew id’ run into problems with it being unlocked but not this much. Phones great, I got it from gsmauthority.com and I couldn’t be happier. I just wish the phone was originally a gsm phone so I wouldn’t run into this. maybe i’ll go back to my iphone. but i still rate this phone 7 out of 10.

Hi,
I don’t have restart problem with my BB 9550, but hope you’ll be able to help me with the problem I have.
Everytime i get connected to WIFI, my Browser Icon disappears. i didn’t have this problem at the beginning, but it’s been a month now that it is happening. Everytime i have to remove my battery so that the Icon appears again, but everytime it’s the same thing.. it disappears again when i get connected by WIfi. My BB is an unlock verizon one. I have deleted the Verizon browser from it, and it seems to me that since i did that the problem started. Can anyone help?
May 02, 2010 @ 18:07:31
Oliver, I am in the EXACT same situation with my unlocked Verizon BB 9550. After doing all sorts of restarts and battery pulls and inputting WEP #’s, I am still without a browser when I connect to WIFI. I gave up and just turned the WIFI off. What a waste of a good phone to not be able to use the WIFI on it. I have asked about this problem in the forums and so far no one has answered it. They tell you how to get the browser back on but that doesn’t help if it just vanishes again as soon as you connect to your WIFI.
Would be nice if someone from Verizon would answer this question. I have a feeling they’re controling this browser issue somehow.

I am having this rebooting problem too but a more frustrating one is the fact that the screen suddenly freezes up every now and then and becomes unresponsive to touch. It usually takes removal of the battery to fix.Now my phone icon is suddenly gone and i cant make or receive phone calls.I have removed the battery loads of time without any success, instead it keeps giving my uncaught exception 10> = 10 which later turns to Application Registry.getOr wait (Ox7c802477365c985) owner died Thread (Thread-77887488,5). Can anybody help me please, its driving mad and i cant make calls

KayFunky……..
As for your phone icon problem, try downloading a new theme for your BlackBerry. Themes are often free & available in the app world via your BlackBerry. Your phone icon should appear on the new theme menu. Good luck:)

I am also having problems with my Storm2 randomly rebooting. I don’t have time for a ten minute reboot in an emergency! Otherwise LOVE my phone.
Thanks
Any answers out there???
Jul 18, 2010 @ 14:23:33
I am glad to know that I am not alone in experiencing the random reboots with the Storm 2. Sorry you all are having the issue, though. I do think it has something to do with the battery connection, cause it happens with me anytime I grab the phone a little too forcefully, or it gets jostled a bit in my pants pocket, or I dont lay it super gently on a table. This is not happened with any of the other 4 phones I have had, but this is my first smartphone, so maybe it just needs a gentler touch? Other than that the phone is fine. But I have to get this problem solved somehow.
Aug 01, 2010 @ 19:24:38
hey people i think i read somewhere that if you put a tape (something that holds the battery at its place like a thin cushon paper) behind the battery cover it might help.this problem is ofcourse because the battery moves, mine used to reboot always when id be using its camera.but then i put a little tape behind it (fix it in a way it doesnt show after u’ve put the battery cover.point it,do something that keeps the battery at its place.i love my phone too but it has given me a lot of random troubles!secondly always update ur blackberry!it really does cut off such problems!

I’ve had the reboot problem with three previous phones, and earlier today my current phone (2 months old) did it too, but this time it kept rebooting for 4 hours (about 35 times) until it finally decided to fully boot. Each time it was about to get the the home screen, it turned white with a RESET message and ’round and ’round it went. Do any of you get this “White Screen of Death”?

9520 2 years old started random reboots month or so ago gradually getting worse till it started rebooting before it was rebooted. Only way to get it started was to leave without battery for 1 hour or so then try again – this usually got it started. Replaced with replacement handset this morning – set up from scratch, setup emails, copied addresses from sim card and low and behold unit starts rebooting continuously. Wonderful – have gone back to using me landline phone as that still works
