Lonman06 Presents: Hacking the iPod Touch Made Insanely Simple

iPod Touch Hacks - FAQ

In this section, iPod Touch Hacks FAQ, you will find answers to common questions regarding Jailbreaking, adding nes, snes, gba, or psx ROMs using sources/repos or iShare, getting the gba bios, using SSH, and whatever else I can think of.

Question: I just added one of the gba repos and installed some ROMs, but I keep getting the message “no ROMs found”.

Answer: You are likely getting this message if you are running 1.1.3 or 1.1.4. The directory where the ROMs must go has changed. You need to SSH into your iPod Touch with any SSHing program. You need to move the ROMs to private/var/mobile/media/ROMs/GBA. If you don’t see this directory you will have to create it. Set permissions to 755 on the folder as well.

Question: when I click the NES app it says: NO NES ROMs were found. Please upload ROMs to /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/NES.

Answer: Your NES games are not gone…by updating to the latest NES the roms now launch from a different folder…var/media/roms/NES. Just copy your NES folder to this new directory and delete the old NES folder so that it wont’ take up space. Once again you can do this by SSHing into your iPod. Once again, you should also set the permissions of this folder to 755.

Question: Where can I get an SSH program and how do I do it?

Answer: Mac users should use Fugu. You can get Fugu at http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/. Windows users should use Putty, which you will find at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/. For more information on how to use these programs look here.

Question: After i download the files into the ROMs/GBA folder I can’t play them on the emulator. It has some words across the top that says “Sorry, but ipSP requires a Gameboy Advance”.

Answer: You need to download the gba bios. You can either do a Google search for this or add the repo from here.

Question: I keep seeing the words repo and source, what does this mean!?!

Answer: Relax, it’s nothing too crazy. A repo/source is basically just a link that you can add to your installer.app that will automatically install applications to your iPod Touch, saving you the hassle of manually doing it yourself.

Question: Do I need a Jailbroken iPod Touch to get installer and use repos?

Answer: Absolutely!

Question: How can I jailbreak my iPod Touch?

Answer: There are many ways you can do this. Do a search on the top of my site and you will see several different guides on doing it. Just remember that you will have to check what firmware you are on because the jailbreaking methods are different for 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, and 1.1.4.

Question: What is Mobile Finder?

Answer: Mobile Finder is basically a program that lets you add and rename folders from your iPod Touch instead of using an SSH program to do this. Mobile Finder is especially useful when using iShare when adding ROMs to create the folders that you need. If you want to see a detailed guide on using iShare with Mobile Finder look here.

Question: How can I get the gba bios using iShare?

Answer: Follow these steps:
-ishare
-download
-Click gba_bios.bin from whatever account you are on
-Library
-Mobile Finder
-Applications
-gpSPhone.app
-Press select at the upper right hand part of the screen to download that file into the application.

Question: Is there a source/repo to add the 1.1.4 “January App Pack”, also known as the iPhone Apps?

Answer: Of course there is! Click here to get it.

  • marcus // August 5, 2008 at 4:59 am

    can i upgrade a 1.1.4 jailbroken itouch to 1.1.5?

  • Brandon // August 6, 2008 at 10:57 am

@Prince n installer, go to the Install tab, click all packages, and install BSD Subsystem that should solve your problem.

@Jacksin i had the same problem a while back. you are going to have to re jail break your ipod.

@ Marcus you can upgrade your ipod to 1.1.5 if you want but as far as jail breaking 1.1.5 goes i am not sure if you can jail break it and if you can i do not know what program you will need.

  • Brandon // August 6, 2008 at 11:09 am

@Marc when you click instal lick the clear cache button if it shows up and then try to instal it. if that does not work try rebooting your ipod and going back in and trying. if this does not work i dont know what else to tell you to try. hope it works.

@Cole do you have any ROMS for psx?

@ Matt and Taz you could always re jail break your ipod/iphoneyou wont lose your apps but they will no longer show up in installer under un install your choice

i was really bored and thought i would answer questions for ppl i know some of them are old but never know when you will need it.

if you have any questions i may be able to help you.
